But he can only turn the crank so fast

Question 1:

In the human power bicycle, the human can apply a lot of torque to the pedal crank. But he can only turn the crank so fast. To attain reasonable speed, he must get more than one turn of the rear wheel for each turn of the crank.

"But he can only turn the crank so fast." - is equivalent to saying "But there is a limit how fast he can turn the crank". Correct?

"so" is an adverb here and I believe the 2c sense fits well here. Could you please confirm it?

2c : to a definite but unspecified extent or degree <can only do so much in a day>

Question 2:
He can only do so much in a day.

I believe "much" is an adverb here. What sense of it fits here?

much: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/much

Thanks a lot for all the help.
