What does these two phrases mean here (both in writing and the picture) :

1) but at what cost

2) far into the distance


? And besides the pain I felt on my toe, I shot the ball far into the distance. It got lost among the trees, and so I ran towards it, looking for it. It was my brand new ball after all! I managed to find it but at what cost.
