"But" and "So" at the beginning of a sentence?

I am taught that never start a sentence with "but" and "so", they are only put in middle of a sentence. However, I've seen "But" and "So" at the beginning of a sentence many times(e.g: in the picture) Is it correct? Can I use it in academic writing?
