It has nothing to do with Her Majesty. Because of the history and various sources of the English vocabulary, pronunciation often has little to do with the spelling. English has five vowel letters in the alphabet, but there are more like 12 vowels in the spoken language. (The exact number depends on your dialect.) For that reason, spelling and pronunciation never match very well. Just because two things are spelled with the same vowel doesn't mean they are prounounced with the same vowel.
