but - a sentence opener

Is it acceptable to open a sentence with "but"? I see it in books all the time, and I think isn't but a conjunction. .... Normally I think they've meant to put a comma instead of a full stop preceding the opening "but sentence" but am I wrong?

By relaxing the rule for purposes of style. You're really supposed to continue with a comma and then add the but-clause, but sometimes the first part is so very long that the whole structure with the but-clause goes on forever.
