but

a)"Had it not been for his weakness in Science, he would have topped the class."

I was asked to rewrite the sentence in the following format:-
"But for his weakness in Science...."

Can anyone tell me how I can rewrite the original sentence a) in the aforementioned way? Would it be like this-
"But for his weakness in Science, he would have topped the class."

Oh, thanks! I was really confused about it after my teacher told me that the right way to rewrite the sentence would be "But for his weakness in Science, he could not top the class." Does this sentence have the same meaning as the other two?

No, that is the opposite meaning! It means that he topped the class because he was weak!
