; but,

Hello,

When we use but in the middle of a sentence to contradict the previous sentence should be a comma used after
; but, or not.
For example, ''Second, the passage alleges that speed cameras have reduced death caused by road accidents
; but, the speaker points out that obviously accidents will be very badly when the speed limit is about 45 to 50 miles per hour.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, Don't use a semi-colon. Don't put a comma after 'but'. eg He loved her but she died.

In general, I would say you need a comma before "but" not a semi-colon, and no comma after; however, that is when using "but" as a coordinating conjunction. With the sentence as written, I would suggest the word "however," in which case you need the semi-colon and the comma as you have them.Just as an aside, the last half of the sentence does not sound right to me. "accidents will be very badly

Thank you. Many times I saw in the middle of two sentences ; however, or ; otherwise, therefore I thought I can do it with but too!

Hi,

Anyway, I will try to keep in mind use just a comma after but.

I hope you mean before 'but'.
