"Busted" usage

I hear "busted" being used in a lot of different contexts. I am confused and I would appreciate it if someone could give the the most common/obvious meaning of it.

For example, does it make sense to say that "What a silly opening move in a tournament chess game, he is busted."?

Thanks!

It's non-standard for "broken", "out of order", "not functioning".

There's an "out of order" sign on the vending machine. It must be [busted /
