burnt v charred

Which one is correct," burnt to death or charred to death"?

bodies become charred after being burnt . isn't it? Oxford learner's contains example sentences like 'burnt to death' but nowhere charred to death..char verb synonymous with burn although news articles use charred to death oxford dictionary doesnt.

We generally think of burning as causing death, and of charring as something that would happen after death. A news article that used charred to death would sound very odd to me. I'd wonder if the writer was not a native speaker.
