Burned to the socket

Hi

An old poem goes:

Bayberry candles, when burned to the socket,

Bring luck to the home and gold to the pocket.

What does it mean "burned to the socket"? What is the meaning of "socket" here?

Also: I suppose that Bayberry candles are candles made from the fruit of wax myrtle. Am I right?

Usually a candle is set onto a candlestick, the plate of which slightly resembles a concave plate and a candle fits into socket like a plug fits into electric sosket. The comparison is fairly close.
