burn out

Would you please tell me what does "burn out" mean in this sentence:

" If you party too much while studying full time at university, you will probably burn out after a while."

I know the meaning of becoming tired or wear out, and with that I would say because of many works that he has put off he would be exhausted.

Top answer

Yes, "burn out" means to be so completely mentally and physically exhausted, that it is impossible to continue. A short rest will not help. Either you must have a very long break, or drop out entirely and do something else.

Thanks. But why partying burn him out? It is entertaining part. Isn't it? It doesn't make sense. (Could I say "it doesn't add up" instead of "it doesn't make sense." in here?)

We have a saying for this.
"He has been burning his candle at both ends."
If you party all night and study and go to school in the daytime, you would quickly burn out.
