Bums above? A verb?

Sadly I have only one translation for that word, here's the whole sentence.
"The fate of fire depends on wood; as long as there is wood below, the fire bums above."

I can understand what the author meant to say, but really, bums?

Ohhh... thanks! And I thought it was some kind of arcane word from the jurassic period - I hate those.
