I'd choose D I can understand why you'd choose "D," but I believe "B" is the answer. His voice throws you off, because it doesn't go with his looks.

3. He lives __ his office.
A.Far from; B.apart from; C.a long way from; D.distant from
I'd choose A but my teacher chose C "C" is the common choice, but I'll have to think some more to decide why.

4. The air in the town centre was __ with petrol fumes.
A.Thick; B.strong; C.full; D.unpleasant;
I'd choose A but my teacher chose D I agree with you. "Unpleasant" doesn't go with the preposition "with." I'd say, "unpleasant because of petrol fumes."

5. They offered her $50 a week and all __ to work at the hotel.
A.Told; B.agreed; C.found; D.in
I'd choose A but my teacher chose D Are you sure you copied this correctly? "B" is the only one which is grammatical, but it makes no sense. We might say, "$50 a week in all to work", or "$50 a week, all told, to work.

A.Took on; B.kept up; C.build up; D.took up

Thank you very much in advance "A" is the correct choice, and is a common expression. "C" does not agree with the singular subject, aside from making no sense..

These are quite difficult, but are common to the ear of a native speaker. Is your teacher a native speaker?? With some of them, the correct answer cannot be determined by rules alone.

Thank you very much for your reply.
This is a piece of my teacher's handouts. And I've checked I copied them correctly.
And I ought to add, my teacher's not a native speaker. I suppose those are copied by my teacher from some book or reference
