Build (the) suspense

Hi,

“He stretched out the story to build suspense.”

I usually see ‘build suspense’ without the definite article but then I came across this:

“The author often strings out the last few chapters of his stories in order to build the suspense.”

Is ‘the’ incorrect here?

Thank you.
