0I am not positive but I think "plated" is a term that has come to us from the restaurant world, where chefs speak of "plating" the food (as opposed to just dumping it on there like Lunch Lady Doris on the Simpsons). Buffet dinners aren't plated - you have to serve yourself, which of course you do while standing, not sitting. Both plated and seated sound to my ear like terms a caterer might use,
