Buffer, leniency, carry across

Hi,

1) "I collected 20 points during the semester and I need the total of 40 to pass the course, so I think that the points I got in the seminars provide a good buffer for me." Can buffer be used like this or would you go for a different word?

2)"If you fail this course, you can carry it across to the next semester (sign up for it again and retake it). I know that you hate dragging courses from one term to another, but it's the only option." Is this okay?

3) Is 'show leniency' too formal or can it be used in everyday conversation?"

"She finally showed us (the students) some leniency and she reduced the total number of points we need to score."

Thank you.

" Can buffer be used like this or would you go for a different word? I think a buffer would be beyond what is required, a margin of safety. Maybe "a good start".
