Buddhist cathedral

I found this sentence on the Internet.

"In 1382 Yoshimitsu ASHIKAGA, third Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, vowed to establish the largest Buddhist cathedral on land adjacent to the Hana no Gosho (Flower Palace)."

My question is if "Buddhist cathedral" is a suitable expression.
