brush up against

Hi teachers,

The coat is hanging on the back of a chair. The woman brushes against it every time she sits down to eat. What does that mean?

Thanks

Hi Clive,

Does it matter if it's 'She brushes up against it..'? I left out 'up' incidentally. There's this term as in 'brush it up and cover it with a bag'
Thank you

It doesn't matter. 'Up' is just an informal intensifier.
