Hey, thanks for replying. still a little bit confused though, I can't tell if the dog is brought with the captain to Geological Survey or not. It doesn't make sense with the rest of the story, that's why I am asking.

It doesn't say that the captain had anything to do with the Geological Survey. For all we know, the dog may have had several owners after the whaling captain and before the Geological Survey. The importance of the whaling captain is that he was the means by which the dog left Spitzbergen.
