Brother or Sister, other than sibling

I wan to write a sentence like:

Adopt a brother.
Adopt a sister.

Adopt a "xxxx" where "xxxx" mean "brother or sister"

Is there any suggestion of a word other than sibling
No slangs please!

The only word I know for that is sibling. But one adopts children, so this is confusing.

Hi,

I don't know if this kind of thing is useful to you?

A political party can adopt a candidate for the election.

You can adopt a bad habit, eg he adopted smoking.

I would suggest 'adopt a child' as child is gender neutral and means boy or girl.

However, if you want it to mean brother or sister, then I'd agree with Barbara that the only word is 'sibling' which is inappropriate here.

Hope that helps...

Thanks to all of you. I will keep "sibling" in my sentence.
Adopt a child (she or he) is ok, but not in the context of the paragraph. Thanks again.

By the way, Ach, welcome to the forums. We'll have to trust that the idea of adopting a sibling does make sense within the context you are working in.

(In Stuart Little, the Littles wanted to adopt a sibling for their son George, but ended up adopting a mouse.)
