Broken & broken down

The sentence below is from Cambridge Dictionary:

Oh no - has your washing machine broken down again?

My question is the following:

Would it be equally correct to use just "broken" instead of "broken down"? If so, would the two sentences have the same meaning?

Thank you.

Top answer

'Broken down' tends to refer to things with engines or large machinery. Smaller objects, or those with no engine mechanism, are usually 'broken'.
