Broke free of/from these foreign powers

Singapore has long been seen as an important area. In fact, a long time ago, the British, Dutch and Portuguese all fought for control of this land. Singapore eventually broke free of these foreign powers and is now one of just a few city-states.

Hi,

Is it better to say "free from these foreign powers?"

Besides, should I insert "the" before "control" in the above? Thanks.

I wouldn't say that "free from" is wrong but "free of" sounds better.

No.
