Broke / broke down / spoilt

Which is correct?

If I open the washing machine door when it is operating, it will break down / spoil.

Top answer

Definitely not "spoil". I have never tried to open a washing machine when one was in use, so I am not quite sure whether it will actually break down, but "break down" makes more sense here. That said, I'd be inclined to say: "If I open the washing machine while it is in use, there will be trouble.

It certainly won't spoil. Only food spoils.
