0 I knew I should have kept my mouth shut. Vegetables are very much a hot potato on this forum. 02br
02br
00Well...I would say that = wild turnip, in BrE. 02br

0 I was hesitant to use that American expression with "pants". I know you guys say "trousers"! 02br

00Anyway, we call it mustard! It's not a vegetable, as I understand it, but a wildflower -- bright yellow, of course. We have acres and acres of it in California. 02br

0 This is a picture of broccoli rabe. It looks like what BrE call "sprouting brocolli", and which I grow wonderfully! 02br

0 Ah yes, we call 'wild turnip' 'field mustard' too – over here, you often find it by streams or rivers, though it turns up in other places as well. Our roadsides are littered with various yellow-flowered mustards. Tricky to tell apart. 02br

00Have you tried it in a salad, CJ? 02br

00Arghh! That weed? (I've never heard it called wild turnip!) 02br
00No. I'd sooner try horse meat with a side of sauteed rat! 02br
00Well, OK, maybe I wouldn't go that far. 02br
02br
00Is it really edible or are you putting me on? 02br

0 I haven't tried it myself, but a friend of mine who's a great eater of wild leaves tells me the young leaves in winter have a 'piquant, cabbagey' flavour. Apparently you can cook it like cabbage, too. 02br

00He doesn't recommend it for the table, though. 02br
