British usage of "me"

I have met someone from England and we got to discussing grammar. I mentioned how appalled I am at the way many Americans can't tell when to use "me" or "I." They (I defend the use of "they" as the sexually neutral third personal singular!) said that in Britain it was considered lower class to use "me" and that correct usage in England would be to say, "Sam gave a present to John and I."

I await your comments.
