Bring to life / Brought to life

Hi, just wondering, are these two ways of describing playing music too similar? I know the image is similar, but hopefully it seems different enough...

The only other option I have for the first is changing it to something like "could act as living beings", and I don't think that sounds as good.

"There was something magical, I thought, in the way that instruments could be brought to life, and used as tools to create music."

"my mouth never daring to breathe life into the instrument."

Without seeing the whole passage, it's a bit hard to judge whether there will be any noticeable repetition. It doesn't look to me as if it would be overly repetitious though. "could act as living beings" sounds a bit weird to me (sounds too literal).

As I told you in another thread, it sounds odd to bring something to life and then use it as a tool (because tools do not have life).
