Bring or take sthg to a whole new level

Is it "to bring something to a whole new level" or "to take something to a whole new level"?

I believe that it is "take" when you are using proper English, but in everyday speaking either is generally accepted.

If I remember correctly, I've always heard only the version with take, but bring would not be ungrammatical.
