Bring me up to speed

Hi there. If I want people to tell me details about situation (for example, an occurrence) I am yet to know about, can I say: "Can someone bring me up to speed here?". I think I heard it in "Fringe" series when an agent arrives at the scene of the crime and wants to know what is that about. I can't find an exact episode. Thank you so much in advance.

I don't see why not, it makes sense and fits the situation you described. It might be better to use "Would" rather than "Can" at the start though. I'm not sure if using "Can" is technically incorrect or not.

  • However, I personally believe that using "Can" is a bit like asking whether they are able to bring you up to speed (whether they do so or not), rather than actually asking them to do so.

Thanks for your answer, Zack. Yeah, I go along with on "can" issue.
