Henry74 The use of the Simple Past instead of the Present Perfect that can be found among AmE speakers has a parallel in the substitution of the Simple Past-equivalent for the Present Perfect-equivalent that is common in the dialects of some Italian Southern regions - notably Sicily. It also has a parallel in Spanish, and if I'm not mistaken, southern regions of Italy were much more influenced by the Spanish than other parts of Italy, so the ultimate source of this phenomenon may be the Spanish language.
