Breathe out at somebody

Hi guys,

Can you help me understand the meaning of "breathes out at me" in this sentence? It's taken from a British novel.

I turn the knob and the door opens a crack.
If an alarm goes off, I’m dead. I hold my breath
for at least a minute, but nothing happens, the shop
just breathes out at me, hotly, fruitily, beckoning
me inside.
