Breaking someon'e string

Hello there,

I saw a movie and there someone's boss told him to start making money, and then he said:

"Or would that be breaking your string?" (it suppose to be a joke)

What does that mean? Does he mean that if he will make money it will break his sequence of not making money?

Thanks.
