Break up, off; occasion

Hi,

1) Can you use something for an occasion?

“I used my latest idea for his birthday (for a different occasion) and now Christmas is about to roll around and I don’t know what to give him.”

2) I’m in the metro and there is almost no signal.

“The train is about to enter the tunnel, so the line will probably break up/off soon.” Should I use ‘up’ or ‘off’?

Thank you.
