Break through shell

Is this what you normally say?

He is a shy person. Once you break through his shell he opens up.

Thanks

The shell analogy is common, but I'm not sure who, exactly, breaks through it. Is it the shy person or the other? I'm sure others will chime in on this.

I hadn't thought of that. Who would you say breaks through it?

Would you say break through shell or out of shell?

Thank you Philip
