break in/into

Which of the following sentences are correct?

A) The thieves broke into her cupboard.
B) The thieves broke in her cupboard.

Break in and break into mean the same thing according to the dictionary, so both should be correct right? If not, then can you explain why?

I think you may be mistaken about what dictionaries do. There are no two words that mean exactly the same thing or can always be used exactly the same way. The dictionary is just giving you other words and/or expressions that have very similar meanings in some contexts
