Hi,
When there's a break in the flow of cars that are coming from one direction, can I say that:
"For a moment the traffic broke up and I had a chance to merge onto the road."?
Would this one work?
Thank you.

No. "Break up" has a different meaning.
"I waited for the moment when there was a break in the traffic and I could safely merge into the stream of cars and trucks. "

No, but you might use "the traffic let up".
