Break in traffic flow

Hi,

When there's a break in the flow of cars that are coming from one direction, can I say that:

"For a moment the traffic broke up and I had a chance to merge onto the road."?

Would this one work?

No. "Break up" has a different meaning.

No, but you might use "the traffic let up".
