Break down barriers - what does it mean?

"I am really proud of you Ken, that is the kind of behavior I am trying to foster in this department",
and then "
As you know we've been trying to break down barriers we've created, and I emphasize that, especially when it comes to our customers, we need to do whatever it takes. keep up the good work!"
The punctuation may be incorrect as I had to write the transcript myself, but I suppose you'll be able to understand what she meant. What barriers does she refer to?
Thank you!

Could the actress say those lines without smirking? Because if so, she's got a future in the movie biz.
