"break a leg" or "good luck"

i know "break a leg" is common in theater to tell an actor " good luck"

is it common using "break a leg" in conversation instead of saying "good luck"??

It's not uncommon for me to hear it in connection with any kind of public performance, not just theater, but not for other events.

For example, you wouldn't tell a friend "Break a leg!" if they said they have a test coming up.

But you might if they had a speech to give.
