[BrE] pronunciation: out of, a lot of,

I found Britons on TV pronouncing these chunks: out of, a lot of like [a? t?b], [? l? t?b]. (not [a? (r)?v], [? l? (r)?v] as in AmE?)

Do people only on TV like BBC tend to pronounce like that or many Britons actually pronunce those words like that?( ~ t?b)

I don't even understand your AmE phonetics. I would have written: out of: ['au d? v (+ vowel sound)] a lot of: [?

Hi

I am having to guess slightly but I thiink you have noticed the "glottal stop". You can google this for more information

In brief, in standard BrE, most consonants are spoken from the middle or front of the mouth using the tongue, teeth and lips. However, it is possible, in London, Scottish and other UK speech, to move the consonant to the back of the throat. This may sound

Mister MicawberI don't even understand your AmE phonetics.
He's writing (r) for the tapped r. I believe IPA uses an upside-down r or upside-down R or some such symbol for those intervocalic sounds we hear as ds, but don't quote me on that.

CJ

Edit: I believe it's the "alveolar tap or flap" in this chart.

I wish everybody'd get the symbols standardized. Good page, CJ – I can type them direct. Thanks.

Hi

- "He's writing (r) for the tapped r."

Since when did it become polite to refer to someone in a discussion in the third person?

These are not round table discussions, Dave. CJ is talking to me (vide supra the quote he included) about Moon's IPA symbol (and look! I've just referred to 2 people here in 3rd person!) How would you have handled it?

Thank you very much Micauber, Dave and CJ for answering my question.

Dave, actually, I thought you would comment on pronouncing t sound(in "out of" and "lot of") that is generally different from AmE. (Perhaps, I didn't make my question understood clearly, sorry.) (Or you already figureed out my question and answered it but it's a little difficult for me to understand)
