Hi teachers,

Is 'colouring pencils' BrE, whereas 'colored pencils' AmE?

Thanks

I can only attest to the American "colored pencils."

In BrE, "coloured pencils" is just descriptive of the pencils, while "colouring pencils" refers to their use for colouring pictures, typically as a child's activity.

Whatever the usage or derivative word, AmE is always "color" and BrE always "colour".

Hi GPY, hi AlpheccaStars,

I read this worksheet from school but it's from a British teacher. Two times she's used 'coloring'.

Equipment needed: colouring pencils or pens.
Equipment needed: Red and green colouring pencils or pens

Is it typos there or there's other meaning?

Thanks

Thanks

You cannot use this pair for the distinction between -ed and -ing, because Americans say, "Get me a box of colored pencils." and Britons say, "Get me a box of colouring pencils."

Colored pen

AlpheccaStarsBritons use the second. They focus on what the object is used for.
This is not true. As I said earlier, "coloured pencils" and "colouring pencils" are both correct in the UK, with slightly different connotations.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your earlier post.
