Braved

Hello,
Could the word 'braved' be used instead of 'said'? For instance:
"I'm not going near that rickety bridge", said Jill.
"I'll go", braved Joe.

Why or why not?
Thanks.

Writers use all kinds of words to avoid saying "said" again and again. It's a literary device, and can be accepted in literary works. In my opinion, this one is a bit strange, but it gets the point across.

  • Extremely few people would use 'braved' to mean 'said bravely' in an ordinary conversation, of course.
