brake(s)

Could I understand this way?
1. 'put on the brake(s)', 'apply the brake(s)' and 'touch the brake(s)' are used for both the handbrake and foot brake.
2-1. 'hit the brake(s) 'jam on the brake(s)', 'press (on) the brake(s) and 'slam on the brake(s)' are used only for the foot brake.
2-2. When the singular form 'brake' is used in 2-1 above, it means the 'brake pedal'.
3-1. 'pull (on) the brake' is used for the handbrake only.
3-2. I see this sentence: "They pulled the brakes and they stopped the car to me."
I think this 'the brakes' means the 'handbrake'. Is the plural used because there are more than
one cars?
4. "He jammed his brakes, and stopped his circling feet." What does this 'jam' mean?

Thank you.

1. -- I don't think 'touch the brakes' is terribly common, but it would apply only to the foot brake (and I think we should modify your terminology to 'emergency brake'; and 'breaks', since, in my car at least, they are both operated by foot. I think that the average driver envisions 4 regular breaks-- one for each wheel-- but a single emergency break system...
