Brag or boast

Hi,

Can anyone explain the difference between the two?

I heard something like this lately: "There's nothing to brag about". Could we use the word 'boast' instead of 'brag' here?

thanks

Hi, In a context like that, there is no real difference. But 'boast' can also be used transitively, eg His home boasted a solid gold bath-tub. Clive

Yes. 'boast' is the higher register word; 'brag' the lower. The meaning is the same.
