Brackets in academic text/quotes

can anyone explain why certain brackets are used in acadmic text, like the exampe below?

continuously choos[ing] .......

Why not capitalize? You are writing on an English forum, you know...

Square brackets—[]—usually contain extra information that is not given in the text, and sometimes

an editor uses them to make comments.

I am not really expecting my post to be criticaly examined, somtimes i have to write in haste and would spend far too much time editing. I usally post with a specific enquiry that i hope to recieve advise on, not how i write the request. Is there a required standard that is expected???

Naturally, it is excepted that if you are asking a question on an English grammar forum,

you should use correct grammar. Otherwise, it simply shows that you don't care much

about the language you use. Likewise, it indicates that you may be inadequate to

have good command of English.

I didn't mean to offend you, as my suggestion was only optional.

You don't have to use capitals if you don't want to. Overall, it's up to you.

You may want to consider this proverb:

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

*If you were in Rome, live in the Roman way; if you are elsewhere, live as they do there.
