B.P.

Hi.
Whay is B.P used for gas stations? What does it stand for?
The closest thing I could find was British Petroleum. I don't understand why it can be used for the name of all gas stations.
Thank you very much for your time and help.

Thank you very much for your response.
But my question is that, is it used for all gas stations? or only for the gas stations that get their petroleum from British Petroleum company?
Thank you

I've never heard BP used to refer to all gas stations, only to BP gas stations.

In my area we have Exxon, Chevron, Shell, Arco, and a few others. No BPs here, and I've seen a few chains in other places that we don't have, like Esso and Rotten Robbie.

Hello, Hrsanei:

I never knew that in some areas of the world, people refer to a gas station as a B.P. Thank you for the information.

It seems that quite often native speakers will often use a brand name to refer to a product. For example, many Americans will ask, "Do you have some kleenex?" They should say "facial tissues." Kleenex is a brand name.

And I hear that

It isn't. Maybe where you live BP is the only brand available.

If 'BP' is really being used for Shell, Exxon, Chevron, and other brand-name stations, in other words, as a common noun synonym for 'gas station', then it's a regionalism. You won't find this convention being

Thank you very much. Your replies were very helpful.
I heard someone use B.P. when he wanted to give me the address of a place. I think he thought the comapny name of gas station is trivial and he just said the first word that came to his mind. I think you are right we cannot generalize such a thing.
BTW, how do you know I am from laramie?

I don't!

In one of your posts you mentioned that you lived in Wyoming, and Laramie is the only city in Wyoming I've ever heard of, so I guessed!
