"boxy" is it slang or may be used formally?

Is it too coloquial to write "the boxy PLATO terminals" in a paper?

talking about the old PCs from the 60s which were similar to large cubes

It's an unremarkable word. The Shorter Oxford dates it from the middle of the nineteenth century, the same period as for "boxlike". Use it freely, and show them this post if they complain.
