"Bowing my head" is not right in this context. Here you'd say: "I had my head buried in a book so I didn't see him walk past me."

I had my head down, reading a book …

I was hunched over reading a book …

"bending my head down" or "bent over a book" seems better to me if you're talking about reading a book.

"bowing my head" suggests praying or acknowledging the presence of someone of a much higher rank than yourself.
