Bound ... for

Hi,
I am new on this forum and I came here with the desire to ameliorate my knowledge of English, so I AM THANKFUL FOR THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THIS FORUM. I almost never actively practised English and need some help from time to time. The colleague who used to help me has left the University and this is why I come to the forum.
My question just now is about the meaning of the following sentence:
"For nobody came to meet the little group of returning Americans, bound mostly for places far away."
I was unable to find out the exact meaning of this last part "bound … for". I searched the Shorter OED as well as the Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs by Rosemary Courtney.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Yohanan, welcome to the English Forums! A. It's its destination.

  • Yohanan, welcome to the English Forums!
  • A.
  • It's its destination.
  • So the "Americans bound mostly for places far away " means that most of the Americans there were soon going to depart for "far away" destinations, where I suppose their home is.

Yohanan, welcome to the English Forums!

For example, a plane can be "bound for Los angeles", meaning it is meant/supposed to fly/go to L.A. It's its destination.

"bound for" = "heading in the direction of" = "intending to go to"

Merci beaucoup! C'est le fait que ces Américains étaient de retour au pays qui m'a posé problème, mais je vois bien à présent de quoi il s'agit!
Cordiales salutations
