Bottom line/s

Hello,
a few days ago I was watching "sex and the city" on TV and Charlotte was talking with her soon to be husband about "bottom lines" and I understood it as a way of saying which things one particularly could not tolerate.

Charlotte, at the end of the conversation, said..." I want you to know that my bottom line is that I can't give you any children". In this case it seems to me that the meaning is "at the end of the story, I can't give you any children".

Can an american english speaker give me some feedback on how this phrase "bottom line" is used and its different meanings?

Thank you very much in advance.
