Hi,

1)she can both swim and dance? This is good.

.or is it .She can do both swim and dance No. You could say She can do both swimming and dancing. But your first sentence sounds better.

2)also can i say."They can do both listen and speak at the same time " No. You need to say either They can

I cannot have seen that.

Treat "cannot" as two words when forming the question.

*I can not have seen that.

Inversion of "I can" to "can I" and addition of the question word "how" gives:

How can I not have seen that? (This is the only suitable form.)

Hi Dany,

... why can not i say."They can do both listen and speak at the same time",i mean why do i need the (ING) or gerund?

Here's a simple explanation. You can do something. The 'something' must be a noun or something like a noun. A gerund is like a noun. 'Listen' is n

Hi Clive ,thank you very much. Now ,for intance, where you stated that i could say "all that i did was run".My question is why can i say RUN there and not be obligated to say RUNNING ,because as far as i know after any verb (like to be in this case )you have to use the gerund ,no?

thanks a lot

Hi Dan,

as far as i know after any verb (like to be in this case )you have to use the gerund ,no? No. It depends on the particular verb. Some verbs require a gerund, some the infinitive. With some you can use either, giving different meanings.

But as far as i know DO can accept both forms so,why isn't right the use of the infinitive here?

Hi,

I think the best way I can try to help you is if you give me some examples that are puzzling you. Then I can try to explain. Talking about examples is better that talking about the language in a general way.

OK? Please write again.
