Both vs Both the ?

Hi,

What's the difference between the use of "both" and "both the" in a sentence? Can you please give me an example? I am often confused whether to use "the" after "both" or not.

Both are possible.

Both Anderson and Johnson are invited to the party.
Both the Anderson family and the Johnson family are invited to the party.

shaunm I am often confused whether to use "the" after "both" or not.
The question is a little too general to give a thorough answer, but here are a few tips.

You can't end a sentence with 'both the'.

Is the cause of the cough bronchitis or pneumonia or both? (Not or both the.)

The Anderson family is correct. An apostrophe can be used, but is not necessary.

The Anderson family is proud to announce the engagement of our daughter, Mary.
